Rx™ Ramp Reduces Workman's Compensation costs

Chuck McMenamy
The rapidly escalating cost to manufacturers of Workman’s Compensation Insurance has caused occupational safety experts to desperately look for better and safer ways to move product from the production facility to the store. Experts say a reduction of slips and falls as well as back-related injuries is needed. The Rx™ Ramp (US Patent # 6,431,815 B1) was developed by Bustin Industrial Products in response to a request from a major snack food manufacturer to use the ramp to provide a safer delivery truck operation.

A June 23, 2003 article in the New York Times by Joseph Treaster featured the rapidly rising costs. Treaster reported that City Sea Foods, a fish wholesaler, insurance premiums jumped 68% this year to $398,288 - an average of nearly $7,000 per worker. The result was the layoff of 7 of their 57 employees. Treaster also reported that the average medical cost for a work injury in California has quadrupled to $35,201 over the past 10 years.

A time study conducted by an Industrial Engineer indicated that by equipping the route delivery trucks with Rx ramps an annual savings of $165,000 would be possible at one west coast distribution center of a leading snack food manufacturer.

The Rx™ Ramp allows a driver to use a hand truck or a cart to move product from the truck to the store, the ramp's grating surface is slip resistant and self-cleaning. The reduction in jumping in and out of the truck reduces the wear and tear of the driver.
